Power from the River

Water from the Waitaki River system has been used to generate electricity since the 1930s.
The Waitaki hydro system generates around 20-25 per cent of New Zealand’s electricity

The Waitaki River is the fourth largest in nz

The dynamic braided river system is home to a large variety of flora and fauna species - both endemic and introduced. The River catchment also supports a number of recreational values including angling, hunting, jet boating, kayaking, and eel fishing.

Power of the river

The Waitaki River is part of one of the largest complex braided river systems in New Zealand. By flow rate, the River is the 4th largest in NZ, with an average flow at Kurow of 359 cubic metres per second.

Helping grow our local and national economies

The irrigators within the Collective contribute approximately $550 million per annum in gross income to the local and national economies, and represent a capital value of land (with infrastructure) in excess of $2.5 billion.

Leading the way in water management

The Waitaki Irrigators Collective is made up five irrigation schemes and an irrigators' society, totalling 580 irrigators over 75,000 hectares across North Otago and South Canterbury. This is approximately 12% of irrigated land in New Zealand!

Improving Quality

The availability and efficiency of the water supply has helped improve the quality of agriculture and horticulture in the region.

It’s all good and fun

Our fund is aimed at positively impacting as many as possible. There are many ways we mean to do this and it may include sponsorship of groups or individuals, supporting education opportunities, projects aimed at enhancing recreation on and around the Waitaki River.

Our community and environment

We are committed to the social and economic development of the community. WIC is therefore undertaking to support various community good, recreation enhancement, and environmental projects in North Otago and South Canterbury, through a dedicated fund.

Looking after the environment

As users of a natural resource, and stewards of the land WIC recognises the need to protect and enhance our environment.
